ISS Science Research Project

Problem Statement

Effect of salt concentration of a buoyant force on a miniature ship.

Project Context

My group and I researched how the salt concentration in water affects the buoyant force on a miniature ship. We chose this topic due to the rapid growth of the shopping industry following its halt during COVID-19. This research project aims to provide conclusive data on whether salt concentration influences the buoyancy force acting on ships during shipments.

Result Collection

We used a data logger connected to a salinity metre to collect the data on whether there would be a change in buoyant force acting on the miniature ship. We inputted the data into a spreadsheet, and I created a graph to process the collected data. We were using the graph to visualise the trends.

Reflection

This project taught me the fundamentals of conducting research, enhancing my people skills and ability to collaborate closely, even when we couldn’t meet in person to discuss and share ideas. Additionally, this project enlightened my group by showing us that salt concentration in water does not affect the buoyant force acting on ships.

Key Learning Points

- How to export data froma data logger.

- How to credit, citate sources of information.

- Standard science research procedures.
